This week i have completed a online training program called Connect Ed. The program was recommended by my topic coordinator for an education topic called Numeracy and ICT. The program links to the general capability in the Australian curriculum of ICT . The Program consists of 4 modules. The connected world, cyber safety and your students, schools and laws and putting it into practice. The program is aimed at new and continuing teacher. On completion of the program you are awarded with a certificate. My certificate can be found in the certificates of achievement menu on the left. I believe this program has improved my awareness of ICT safety which will be implemented throughout my lessons.

You may notice that your child may be using new and unfamiliar apps, games and social sites. It is important that you monitor your child's activities on these sites. You can do this by setting rules around use of ICT. For example negotiating on times when it is acceptable and unacceptable to use. This way you can monitor the use of ICT to ensure they are making positive choices. If there are set protocols in place students will begin to understand the importance of remaining safe when using ICT. To ensure children are able to remain safe from possible dangers you should also discuss with your child the dangers of ICT. Some dangers include things that seem too good to be true or a suspicious unknown person attempting to make contact. To defuse such dangers students can simply exit, avoid and notify an adult of the issue. Students need to become aware that there are basic safety rules which need to be considered when using ICT. Also remember to install internet security and change privacy settings to get the best security for your child. ICT isn't all scary, it can be a vibrant arena for great learning and social interaction and are the way of the future. Some simple checks and changes can help you realise that these medium are not as scary as they appear.
The most effect strategy for maintaining the safety of your child on social sites is to talk to your children. Ask your children what they talk about with friends and if they talk to people they may not know. By talking openly about the sites both you and your child will become more informed of the value and the precautions. Children can often use these sites to bully other students, this is known as cyber bullying. Stopbullying.gov describes cyber bullying as ‘bullying that takes place using electronic technology. Electronic technology includes devices and equipment such as cell phones, computers, and tablets as well as communication tools including social media sites, text messages, chat, and websites.’ The site also details how to identify cyber bullying and report it. If you feel your child maybe being cyber bullied you can report it to the school or their teacher. By better understanding ICT as a parent you will be more informed about how to keep your child safe when using ICT. Other websites such as www.esaftey.gov.au have helpful information for both adults and students.
Although all this new technology may seem daunting and dangerous it can be utilised to better understand the world around us. This technology can also help parents better understand ICT. Don't be afraid to jump on an iPad or computer and investigate what they have to offer. There are also a number of resources which are shown on my blog. These resources are both informational and helpful. Feel free to message me directly if you have any concerns or just would like to talk.

When browsing on the internet there are a number of things which have been written by another person or organisation. To protect their work authors put copyright on their work to prevent people from copying it. People are often unaware of such copyright laws and directly copy others work. How can we use other people information in our own work? you may ask. As students will discover, authors work needs to be referenced to, if they wish to use it. The Authors name and the site which the information originated from should also be stated. One effective way of gathering resources is to use a Creative commons. What is a creative commons you may ask? The image located on this post has been sourced from a creative commons. The picture has a direct link to the original source and the name of the author. Students can use similar creative commons to search for information and pictures. All resources which may be useful to you will be located on my blog.
In the coming weeks I will be posting a university assessment piece on my blog. The assignment is written to the parents of students in years 3-6. The assignment is to introduce parents to both the potential and dangers of the internet. The blog post will be based around the Australian Curriculum ICT General capability which spans across many subject areas.
Over the past few weeks i have participating in my professional development linked to a number of the AITSL standards (too many to list). The online course which i have complete is named BRITE. The BRITE course aims to build resilience in pre-service teachers. In completing this course i believe i have minimized my chances of burn-out in the future. I will also cite the program as evidence that i have met a number of AITSL standards. A certificate can be found in the Certificates section on the left menu. I would recommend this course to any teachers new or existing. I have attached the link below.
