1.4 Strategies for teaching Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander students
During my time at university I completed a topic called 'Teaching Indigenous Australian Students'. Throughout this topic we explored different teaching strategies and ways of teaching Indigenous and Torres straight islander students with respect to their culture. During this topic we were required to write an assignment detailing how race and racism impact students and what we can do as teachers to curve this. Though my engagement in the topic and assignment, I learnt that race can play a significant part in how students engage with learning. I believe all students regardless of race should have ample opportunities to learn. Strategies for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander students can also be effective on other students. One of the most influential strategies (not only for Indigenous students) in teaching is through storytelling. In my recent practicum I was able to incorporate storytelling into my unit on narrative. Students were exposed to storytelling in a number of ways. From me (reading the class text), creating and reading their own narratives and reading and listening to their peers narratives. Storytelling is intertwined with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander culture through dream time stories and cave painting. By teaching a unit on narrative I was able to incorporate the teaching strategy of storytelling which links to the standard 1.4. The unit plan on narrative can be found by clicking this link.
