2.4 Understand and respect Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people to promote reconciliation between Indigenous and non-Indigenous Australians
During my final placement at Prospect Primary I able to teach a class during reconciliation week. Students were introduced to the word 'reconciliation' and what that means. This lead to a discussion about how we should teach everyone equality no matter their beliefs and race. Students were then read the aboriginal story 'How did birds get their colours' by Mary Albert. The illustrations were adapted from aboriginal paintings of the story. Students were then shown works of aboriginal art from various artists. The students were then give the opportunity to try some dot painting themselves (as shown on right). The artworks were then used to make a classroom display.
