2.6 Information and Communication Technology
During my 2nd placement I taught an English unit on poetry. One of the types of poems we focused on was Haiku. Students found the topic of poems to be 'boring' and not relevant to their current lives. To motivate students about poetry, I introduced a video from a children's show which incorporated haiku as a form of rap battle. Students thoroughly enjoyed the connection between haiku and rap and increased their engagement. This evidence links into the standard 2.6 by incorporating a YouTube video into a seeming boring topic students found new interest and motivation. Students were also able to communicate and feel relevance with the topic. The video can be found by clicking on this link.
During my first year of teaching I used a classroom management program called Class Dojo. The program is used in a number of ways. I found the program particularly useful in taking the role. Students have their own avatar and must sign in each morning to receive points throughout the day. This is a visual representation of their behaviour and helps the participate and stay on task. The program can also be used to create groups, play music, help teach growth mindset, perseverance, empathy and mindfulness. Overall i have found the use of Class Dojo as a ICT tool very effective in encouraging participation.
