3.5 Use effective classroom communication
Throughout my final practicum i received feedback from my mentor teacher commending me on a clear loud instructions. A clear loud voice enabled students to listen to the given instructions and follow accordingly. The Lesson feedback sheet shows the teachers comment on my clear, loud instructions. When clear instructions are given to students they understand what is expected of them for the remainder of the lesson. The feedback sheet can be found by clicking on this link.

Throughout my various placements i have realised that an effective way of gaining students attention is critical to maintaining order and communicating clear instructions to students. Rather than raising my voice and attempting to yell over the roar of the classroom i decided that a song would do the talking for me. I chose lyrics from the popular song "Ice Ice Baby' and played a sample of the song. The attention grabber requires the students to respond. I would locate myself in a particular place in the room and quote the lyric 'Alright Stop'. Students would then reply all together with 'Collaborate and Listen'.

Checking for understanding at the beginning of each lesson is an important part of communication. I simply did this by asking questions about the previous lesson. This acts as an informal assessment of understanding. Questions I would ask include: What was the key message from the last lesson? What was your favourite part of the last lesson? Was there anything you didn't understand? By creating information communication between students and myself I was able to have a deeper understanding of what students know, understand and can go. This then guides my future planning and lessons. A copy of lesson feedback can be found by clicking on this link.
