The most effect strategy for maintaining the safety of your child on social sites is to talk to your children. Ask your children what they talk about with friends and if they talk to people they may not know. By talking openly about the sites both you and your child will become more informed of the value and the precautions. Children can often use these sites to bully other students, this is known as cyber bullying. Stopbullying.gov describes cyber bullying as ‘bullying that takes place using electronic technology. Electronic technology includes devices and equipment such as cell phones, computers, and tablets as well as communication tools including social media sites, text messages, chat, and websites.’ The site also details how to identify cyber bullying and report it. If you feel your child maybe being cyber bullied you can report it to the school or their teacher. By better understanding ICT as a parent you will be more informed about how to keep your child safe when using ICT. Other websites such as www.esaftey.gov.au have helpful information for both adults and students.
Although all this new technology may seem daunting and dangerous it can be utilised to better understand the world around us. This technology can also help parents better understand ICT. Don't be afraid to jump on an iPad or computer and investigate what they have to offer. There are also a number of resources which are shown on my blog. These resources are both informational and helpful. Feel free to message me directly if you have any concerns or just would like to talk.
